Privacy Policy

• Account data: email address, username, display name, password (stored only as a hash) and, if you sign in with Google, the identifier and profile picture Google shares with us.
• Profile and content: everything you choose to publish — headline, bio, skills, links, avatar and cover image, projects, polls, comments, votes, bookmarks, applications and team memberships.
• Usage data: server logs with IP address, browser and timestamps, kept for security and debugging; view counts on posts (not tied to your identity).
• Preferences: the interface language and the look you pick are saved on your account (and in two small cookies); light or dark mode and dismissed banners are stored in your browser only.

To run the Service: signing you in, showing your profile and posts, delivering notifications you have enabled, sending account emails (verification, password reset), preventing abuse and rate-limiting, and improving Devchaos based on aggregate usage. We do not sell personal data and we do not show third-party advertising.

• Other users: your public profile and everything you publish. Applications are visible to the project owner; email addresses are never shown to other users.
• Service providers that process data on our behalf: hosting and database providers, image storage, our email delivery provider (for account emails) and Google (only if you use Google sign-in).
• GGDB: as a sub-site, Devchaos may share aggregate statistics and, if you link your GGDB profile, that link, with the GGDB platform.
• Authorities, when the law requires it or to protect users from harm.

We use a session cookie to keep you signed in and a short-lived cache of your session to keep pages fast; both are essential and HTTP-only. Two small preference cookies remember the interface language and the look (colour and style) you picked, so the first paint is already right; if you are signed in, both choices are also saved on your account so they follow you to other devices. Light or dark mode and dismissed banners live in your browser's local storage. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies.

Account and content data stay until you delete them or your account. Server logs are kept for a limited period for security purposes. Deleting your account removes your profile, posts, comments, votes, applications and uploaded images; backups are purged on their normal rotation. What you wrote in the forum is kept in anonymised form — shown as written by “Deleted member”, with no link to you — because other members' replies depend on it. Ask us if you need a specific forum post removed as well.

You can view and edit your profile, change your email or password, manage notification preferences and disconnect Google in Settings. You can delete your account and all its content from Settings → Danger zone. Depending on where you live you may also have rights of access, correction, portability, restriction and objection — contact us and we will help.

Devchaos is not intended for children under 16 (or the age of digital consent where you live). If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

Passwords are hashed, sessions use HTTP-only cookies, uploads are re-encoded before they are served and every write to the database checks who is asking. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a unique password and tell us if you notice anything suspicious.

If we change how we handle personal data in a meaningful way we will announce it on the Service before the change takes effect.
